In June of this year, I was able to attend Electric Daisy Carnival aka EDC out in Las Vegas, Nevada. While I was walking around, I happened to drop by to the Secret tent and was able to see something that I have never seen before... A bunch of people would leave the tent with what looks like an abstract, tidal wave of color all over their arms. I had to get it!!! I was able to get some of those rad paintings and here is what my arms turned out looking like: All weekend I had to drop by to get a new one or just say wassup! This was something that was totally unique in itself, and had to get an interview with the creators of BLV. With this in mind, this is how the interview with Black Light Visuals came about. interview with blv:1. What is Black Light Visuals? Black Light Visuals is a group of artists and creative minds that specialize in the abstract art of marbling. This unique technique has been developed through the company over the years, and has been metamorphosed into a skin-safe and clothing-safe "dyeing" process, where psychedelic patterns and UV reactive colors create a look that is ever-evolving and completely unforgettable. 2. How/Why did you start this company/brand? BLVisuals was founded by Brad Lawrence, a collegiate art student who developed tendonitis in both of his wrists. This made drawing and painting very difficult, so he began to experiment by dripping paint from larger bottles onto a fluid surface, discovering the way the water and paint would react depending on the different methods he tried. 3. Can you give a little background on the brand? The brand Black Light Visuals came about when a group of fellow artists, friends, and family began to join Brad in his journey. Originally BLVisuals, the "B" and "L" synonymously stood for "Black Light", but also "Brad Lawrence". The eye logo is used as a symbol of the Third Eye, as well as the ability to use the mind to unlock new avenues that may not be initially feasible. The tear drop below the eye is actually not a tear, but rather a drop of paint. 4. What inspired the creation of this art form? The inspiration came from the drive to continue creating art, even as a therapeutic form. For artists, there can be many setbacks in life that can affect the way their art is produced. Being able to have a form of expression in the art realm is extremely important to individuals that need the arts to learn, grow, and develop their skills, even while some forms of art may not be possible for certain individuals. 5. How do you create these paintings? Are they safe (for the people who aren't familiar with it)? The paintings are created by dropping paints of varying colors onto a fluid surface. The drops are added according to the painter's preference, and can be manipulated on the fluid surface using needle-dragging, wind, and sometimes even vibration to get the desired effects. Many marbling styles will utilize oil-based paints that are uncomfortable on skin and clothing, and some may use other thickening agents that can be outright toxic to the skin. At BLVisuals, we use water-based acrylics that adhere to skin and clothing in an ultra-thin layer that is breathable, washable on skin, and permanent in clothing. All ingredients used during the painting process are free of all common allergens and are USDA nontoxic! 6. If you had to describe in one word the meaning behind your art, what would it be?
